Rosh Hashannah

I decided to attend high holiday services at Beth Jacob in Hamilton, with my brother Peter, the synagogue I grew up at, rather than at Or Shalom in London, where I had gotten to know a few people over the summer, when I had attended their services over the summer, but decided it wouldn't fell quite right.

I decided to stay at Bronte Creek Provincial Park again as opposed to any other options.

Peter was very happy to have me sitting in "our family row." Attendance as been dwindling as the community ages and thee was a new cantor, a female, on the bima.  The service met my spiritual needs. Peter cooked amazing meals as usual.

In the afternoons I rode my bike on the trails around the Provincial Park.  Some of the trees were starting to show some fall colour.

September at Silver Dove

The afternoon prior to leaving Burlington to return to Silver Dove Estates I met up with my Toronto Hydro collegues Dean and Carrie George at a Dim Sum place in Markham.

Dean is retired and Carrie is working part time with plans on retirng soon.  I had run into Dean last summer on the GTA Am tour.  We had been keeping in touch on Facebook recently and this was a good opportunity to see them both in person, while enjoying cusine we all enjoy.  I had been to the same restaurant both on my own and with Vivianne, so knew what to expect as far as the food goes.  We had a nice visit, sharing stories from the workplace and our recent travels.

The Thursday after I got back I had been invited to play in a fundraising tournament for a Dragon Boat team made up of breast cancer survivors to be played at Maple City, a nice private course sort of nearby I had played in July. One of the ladies from Wardsville Golf Course had been given a fore-some at half price and was looking to fill out the team.  The racing team was fundraising to go on a big trip to a competition in 2018. It was a perfect day for golf and the course was in great shape.  We all played from the forward tees, which was fine on most holes, but one of the par three's, which usually has a forced carry over water was reduced to a chip shot from the side of the green.  The buffet meal afterwards was nicely presented.  Many dollars were raised on the silent and live auction items as well as the "boobs/butt" coin flip 50/50 contest.

Friday after my regular 18 hole Bingo, Bango, Bongo game with Joanne, Ab and Dawn, I played in the 9 hole Meat draw tournament.  It is a monthly event I had been wanting to play in since I joined the club, but it was generally filled up.  A team (played in six-somes) gender alternate shot scramble was looking for a player, so I gladly joined up.  It wasn't as chaotic as I was expecting with 12 players/6 carts on each hole. Afterwards there was a buffet dinner and the prizes (various types of meat) were awarded.

Saturday was the celebration of life for Ron, in Simcoe.  Throughout the week, I had been corresponding with his kids to see if they would change their minds about me attending. They had not, so I decided to visit Lorraine again in order to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding on Lake Simcoe.  The lake Ron grew up close to and something I had never tried before.  He had separated from me in order to live his last days in a retirement home where he could live like a king, being waited on hand and foot and in order that I could go on and live the exciting life I deserved.  I felt this was the right thing to do as opposed to showing up for the service where my presence was not desired.   I had a good time.  The weather was perfect, the beach packed with people enjoying a bonus summer like day in mid September.  I only fell off the board once, when the wake from some passing power boats came over the back of the board.  The next time I felt a wake approaching I went back down onto my knees and was able to keep my balance.  After it passed I got back up again.  After this experience I think I prefer kayaking.

PLEASE READ BEFORE NIECES WEDDING POST - Visit to Toronto Area Early September 2017

On the Thursday in advance of my niece's wedding I moved the trailer to Bronte Creek Provincial park, which I had found to be quite satisfactory during my visit a few weeks ago for the Aufruf.

On Friday, I had arranged an appointment for a massage with my RMT, Janice, in Scarborough.  I was picking up and dropping off some things at my locker, I hoped to get in touch with and have a quick visit with Ron, my husband, and then attending a get together with a group of ladies from my years as President of Paradise Condominium on Eglinton.  I had been seeing a couple of the gals somewhat regularly, had seen another a couple of times recently, but the two others I hadn't seen in years.  We had a lovely, leisurely dinner at Red Lobster in Scarborough.  In attendance were Tracy Hernandes one of the first property managers at Paradise who I hadn't seen in years,

Darnell Summers (whose birthday is the same as mine) who managed Oasis and managed the shared board for a while, who I hadn't seen in years, Jane White who was on my board and later became a property manager herself, so is now a colleague of Darnell and Tracy, who I had seen about once a year recently, Vivienne Mok a later manager at Paradise, who I had seen a couple of times a year due to our shared love of Dim Sum, and Lorraine Pruskie who was our regional manager and recently retired.  Lorraine had always said she would hire me as a property manager in a minute based on my prior experience and her dealings with me as President of the Condominium board, should I want to be one.  I had visited Lorraine a couple of times this summer as our places were fairly close together.

On Saturday  I played another new course to me in the Burlington area with my friend Enid Aaron.  The course was Tyandaga.

The course has some good holes, with nice views of Lake Ontario in the distance.

A couple of holes have been ruined by housing development encroaching on the course, requiring them to shorten a couple of holes in order to reduce the number of balls spraying into adjacent back yards.

After the round of golf, which was rather long due to how busy the course was, we went for a Chinese dinner at a restaurant we had been to previously and enjoyed.   After dinner I needed to do laundry, so headed to a laundromat nearby.  It wasn't busy, so the chore was accomplished quite quickly.

Niece's Wedding in Oakville

I've gotten terribly behind in my blog posts.  I'm sorry to all my regular readers.  I hope you haven't all disappeared.  Some of the reasons I have gotten so far behind are, that I don't think it as interesting when I am mostly stationary, I've been busy having fun and making memories and in some places I have not had the best internet access. Over the next few weeks I hope to get caught up on what I have done in the last 8 months.

The major focus of the Spring and Summer of 2017 was the activities surrounding my nieces wedding, which was held September 10th.  They were fortunate that it turned out weather wise to be a great day for an outdoor wedding.

A couple of days in advance of the wedding I moved my trailer from Silver Dove Estates to Bronte Creek Provincial Park.  The morning of the wedding, my nephew came for a visit, including lunch (I managed to convince him to do the grilling), getting dressed and heading to the wedding.  It was a great visit.  I think the last time we had seen each other was in the fall of 2016 when I was in the Niagara Area for the GTA Am Tour Championship, though looking back at the blog, I didn't mention it.  I know it was since I had the trailer, because that visit was his first chance to see it. We had a lot to catch up on, including that he was planning on relocating from Niagara-on-the-lake to Calgary to advance his career.

The wedding venue was very lovely for a small wedding (about 100 guests).  It was held at The Harding Waterfront Estate, right on Lake Ontario.

The grooms family, being larger, was better represented than mine.  Only a few of my relatives were in attendance.

My mother, may she rest in peace, a wedding planner before it was an actual profession, would have been pleased with the event.  Everything was lovely.  The DJ/MC helped to keep things on schedule and made it fun.

Of course my niece looked beautiful in her wedding gown.

Her groom was handsome.

Both sets of parents were supportive. The bridal party, made up of dear friends of the bride and groom looked terrific and played their roles brilliantly.
The ceremony was meaningful and the meal nicely served and delicious.

The dancing was extensive and the desert buffet was scrumptious.

As the service was on a Sunday, not too many guests made it to the end, when the bride and groom were reportedly being picked up by limo to go to a nearby hotel to spend their first wedded night.  Even I cut out before the very end.

The only negative part of the day was learning by email just after I sat down for dinner that my husband Ron, had passed away early that morning.  Though we had been separated for about 5 years, I still had feelings for him.   We had gone for lunch in late June and we had spoken just before the Labor Day weekend and were planning on getting together later in September at Silver Dove Estates.  I have been trying to reach him in the week leading up to the wedding but was unable to get an answer on either of his phones.  It turned out that the reason was he was in hospital from Tuesday to Sunday, when he passed away.  His children chose not to inform me until the end had come and at that point they asked that I not attend the service that would be held for him.  Reference is often made to the circle of life, but usually it is one dies and another is born.  In this instance one marriage ended and another began.  RIP Ron.
